I am not usually one to buy an extended warranty or even consider a ‘service plan’ because it seems that when I do, nothing ever goes wrong with the product…I feel cheated.
A DIFFERENT GAMBLE: Travel coverage (insurance), on the other hand, is a totally different type of gamble we take because it is long term, there is a lot of money at stake and goodness forbid your child gets sick or worse at the destination. Still, I am one that is likely to take this gamble as well. In my experience, unless I am traveling at times of the year where weather becomes an issue, travel interruption insurance is rarely needed. Besides that, I normally take my chances.
CANCEL FOR ANY REASON: This is where the travel coverage makes sense. Why? Because you do not need a reason to cancel your trip…you just can and still receive up to 75% of your trip cost back from the insurance. Of course there is a catch…the ‘Cancel For Any Reason’ Coverage must be purchased and paid for at the time you deposit on your trip. Additionally, at least 10 people from your group must be purchasing group travel insurance but that’s it.
The CFAR coverage is comprehensive as well and still has all the benefits of normal travel insurance (ie. medical benefits, lost baggage coverage, cancellation coverage, etc.) ut it goes farther and gives you the flexibility to cancel…well for ANY reason. It may be 6 months to a year before a student travels and who knows what might happen between now and then? Jobs change, family issues arise, people move … things happen!
STUDENT TRIP COVERAGE: When it comes to student travel, you typically plan and start paying for the trip a year in advance. During that year, you make payments and feel confident that your student will still be traveling with the group when the time comes. In most cases you are right and nothing ever pops up to alter these plans. There are times, however, when ‘something’ happens – it could be a good something like a better job offer or a bigger house causes the family to move out of the district or a bad something happens and the child can not travel. These are the times where purchasing a travel coverage with CFAR truly makes us look smart.
