Associated with checked bags
Important information about requirements and costs associated with baggage fees on various airlines.
Updated Information coming soon!
As of November 2018
On Southwest Airlines domestic flights, the first two checked bags for each passenger is included (free) with you airfare as long as those bags are under 50 lbs each and is not considered ‘oversized’ (see below).
Southwest does have a fee for checked baggage which are over-sized and/or over-weight (50 lbs or more) as follows:
Over-Sized / Over-Weight Baggage
Overweight Checked Bag: $75 per bag weighing more than 50 pounds up to 100 pounds
Oversize Checked Bag: $75 per bag larger than 62 inches up to 80 inches
With this said, if the instruments are both OVER-SIZED and OVER-WEIGHT, Southwest will charge $150 per item each direction of the flight ($300 round-trip per item).
Carry-Ons: Musical Instruments (including the guitars):
According to Southwest Airlines Web Site:
If your musical instrument (including case or covering) exceeds the sizing requirements for carry-on items (10“x16“x24”), it can be carried onboard as long as it will fit in an overhead bin or under a seat onboard the aircraft and there is space available when you board the aircraft for the instrument.
To sum it up, you may carry-on your other instruments as long as they fit in the overhead.
IMPORTANT: It is highly recommended that you do your best to check-in the group exactly 24-hours before your flight and so that you are in the early boarding groups A & B.
Payment for Fees
Southwest does not allow pre-payment for checked baggage fees. All payments for all checked-bag fees must be paid at the airport at the time of check-in for the flight. Payment must be in the form of a credit card, debit card or cash accepted at the airport.
